An exciting opportunity is available for a full-time Optometrist to join an established practice in Windhoek, Namibia, with the added opportunity to make a meaningful impact through its PAD (road) outreach programme.

The successful candidate will take on the role of main PAD Optometrist, travelling to towns and communities across Namibia to provide quality eye-care services where they are most needed. This is an excellent opportunity for an Optometrist who enjoys variety, meeting new people and expanding their clinical experience beyond a traditional practice environment.

All travel logistics are taken care of, with transport, fuel, accommodation and meals provided during outreach trips. When not travelling, the Optometrist will be based at the Windhoek practice, working alongside a professional team and gaining valuable exposure to a broad range of patients and clinical cases.

Working Hours 

  • Monday – Friday: 08:00 – 17:00
  • 1-hour lunch break
  • Saturdays: 08:30 – 12:30
  • Approximately 2 Saturdays per month, occasionally 3 depending on the month, on a rotational basis.

The role

The successful candidate will be responsible for the full scope of optometric services, including:

  • Comprehensive refraction and dispensing
  • Trial-frame refractions during outreach visits where required
  • Contact lens fitting and management
  • Low vision assessment and management
  • Comprehensive ocular health examinations
  • Ocular disease detection and appropriate referral
  • Tonometry and fundoscopy
  • Excellent patient communication and education
  • Effective patient and clinic workflow management
  • Community eye-health outreach services
  • Relevant clinical and administrative duties

Minimum requirements

The ideal candidate will be a friendly, capable and adaptable Optometrist who is comfortable working independently while also becoming an integral part of the practice team. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, as the role involves working with diverse communities and building rapport quickly.

The successful candidate should:

  • Be qualified and HPCSA registered
  • Be confident working independently
  • Communicate exceptionally well with patients and colleagues
  • Be adaptable and comfortable with changing environments
  • Enjoy travelling and working in smaller communities
  • Be able to work efficiently in busy conditions
  • Remain calm and professional under pressure
  • Be confident performing trial-frame refractions when required
  • Have a genuine interest in community eye health
  • Be willing to travel extensively throughout Namibia
