A well-established, privately owned 24/7 Veterinary Hospital is seeking a skilled and confident Emergency Veterinarian to join its dedicated overnight emergency team. This is an exciting opportunity for a veterinarian who thrives in a fast-paced environment, enjoys critical care and emergency medicine, and is passionate about making a real difference when patients need it most. The successful candidate will work a varied and rewarding night shift, managing emergency consultations, performing urgent surgical procedures, and overseeing hospitalised cases through the night. This position offers flexibility, with permanent or part-time opportunities available and up to three night shifts per week. Additional daytime shifts may also be available for veterinarians seeking extra hours. Shift Details: Night Shift: 9 PM – 9 AM Flexible permanent or part-time position Up to three shifts per week available Additional day shifts optional The ideal candidate will: Have a minimum of 3 years' veterinary experience Be confident working sole charge Have the ability to perform emergency surgeries independently Be comfortable managing a variety of medical and critical care cases Previous emergency experience or postgraduate studies will be highly advantageous What's on Offer: $1,150 per weekday night shift (including 12% superannuation) Additional commission on selected services, including consultations and surgeries performed after midnight Average additional commission of approximately $400 per shift, excluding surgical commissions Sponsorship opportunities available for veterinarians with degrees recognised in Australia Supportive and experienced emergency team environment Exposure to a varied and interesting caseload This opportunity is ideal for an emergency-focused veterinarian looking to join a dynamic hospital environment where no two shifts are ever the same. The role

  • Responding to emergency consultations and triaging urgent cases
  • Performing emergency surgeries and life-saving procedures when required
  • Diagnosing and treating critically ill or injured patients
  • Monitoring and managing hospitalised animals throughout the shift
  • Administering medications, fluids, pain relief, and ongoing treatments
  • Providing compassionate communication and updates to pet owners during stressful situations
  • Collaborating with veterinary nurses and support staff to ensure high standards of patient care
  • Maintaining accurate medical records and treatment plans
  • Stabilising patients for continued care or referral where necessary
  • Handling a varied caseload including trauma, toxicity, respiratory distress, gastrointestinal emergencies, and post-operative complications
  • Ensuring emergency equipment, medication, and treatment areas remain prepared and fully stocked
  • Making confident clinical decisions in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment
  • Supporting continuity of care by providing detailed handovers to the daytime veterinary team
  • Adhering to professional, ethical, and regulatory veterinary standards at all times

 

Minimum requirements

  • Has approximately 3 years of post-graduate veterinary experience
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to patient care and client service
  • Thrives in a team-oriented environment with open communication
  • Enjoys working in a busy, modern, and well-resourced hospital
  • Is dedicated to continuous learning and professional development
  • Is registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC)
  • Is calm under pressure, adaptable, compassionate, and capable of working independently while still contributing positively to a team environment.
