Working
overseas made easier!
On 21st and 22nd April leading international recruitment consultancy,
Bev
Meekel Consulting held a Preparation Seminar for optometrists looking
to
work in Australia, New Zealand or the United Kingdom. The seminar
provided
informed insight into the requirements of the Australian and British
Councils
in terms of the examinations which South African optometrists must pass
in
order to practice in those countries.
Three British College of Optometry examiners - Jane Macnaughton, Joy
Myint
and Catherine Viner were joined by John Gambarana of Trans-Global
Migration
and a local optometrist, to provide an intense 2 day exposure
to
what lies ahead for those who intend to relocate either temporarily
or
permanently.
"We held the seminar as the exams are quite tough and the cost
of
traveling to Australia or the UK, paying to sit the exam and return
-
possibly without passing is prohibitive" Bev Meekel explains. "The
two
day seminar exposed delegates to practical exam scenarios covering
the
type of questions they will be asked as well providing tips on what
the
examiners expect. John Gambarana gave valuable information about the
points
system for entry into the countries concerned and the relocation
process
in general, whilst the local optometrist, having written
the
Australian exams already, was well placed to share his
experience."
Over 40 delegates from across the country attended the seminar
in
Johannesburg and comments received were universally
favourable.
Following the training delegates felt that they were better prepared for
the tests
ahead.
Bev Meekel also arranged a special sitting of the IELTS literacy test
-
another requirement for those wishing to relocate – so that delegates
could
complete it at the same time as attending the
seminar.
Having recently opened an
office in New Zealand and with close
affiliations in both Australia and the UK, Bev Meekel Consulting
is
ideally placed to assist optometrists wishing to gain overseas
work
experience or emigrate. The company also facilitates placement in
the
Netherlands, Trinidad &Tobago in the West Indies, the Middle East
and
Southern Africa.
